Folk song, indeed singing in general, is under threat. Our technological environment and all-inundating media are silencing the songs that once accompanied daily life. Songs of conspicuous wealth now live in the shadows: they are scarcely still known, hardly sung any more.
But we should not forget the extraordinary efforts made to save this precious, unique heritage. The names of Goethe and Herder, Achim von Arnim, Clemens Brentano, Ludwig Uhland came to mind, as well as the numerous folk-song arrangements by Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms up to the work of Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodál.
The songs chosen for this volume are taken from the collection W. A. Zuccalmaglio (1803–1869).

The vocal solo part is integrated in the score. Two copies are therefore necessary for a performance.
